Welcome to Figos & Amêndoas!

I have started this blog, Figos & Amêndoas simply to share with you the wonderful foods of the Algarve. Figos & Amêndoas mean exactly that. Figs & Almonds, the most sought after sweets in the Algarve are made with one or the other or both, and the combination couldn’t be any better.

When travelling along the southern coast of Portugal, you will smell certain aromas in the air you'll never forget. I grew up in Germany and traveled every summer to Portugal with my parents and sisters. Once we reached the Pyrenees in Spain, we knew Portugal was just behind the mountain, right after my sisters and I slept for a few hours…Reaching Portugal through the Badajoz/Elvas border the smells of Portugal were in the air. Nothing compared to when reaching the most southern part of Portugal, the Algarve. The smell of fresh pressed olive oil, sun dried figs, roasted almonds, drying herbs in the scorching sun, the smell of ocean and dried vegetation due to lack of rainfall in the summer months….the aromas were hypnotizing. Even just writing about it, triggers my memories of my childhood vacations.

Those aromas I remember so fondly and the flavours which to this day live in my mind are those foods I will discuss here. It was so great as to make a mark in my childhood and I want share with all who love food, the good foods Algarve has to offer.

From Vila Real de Santo Antonio to Vila do Bispo is only 160 km and in between you will find, different dialects, different ways for preparing the same types of foods, hundreds of beautiful beaches with sun toasted sand to fill between your toes and little family owned restaurants to eat local foods you will always remember. The Algarve is a little corner in Europe, at the tip of the Iberian Peninsula and has more to offer than one may think…It may not be new to Europe’s wealthiest, but the average Canadian, has never heard of this little foodies paradise!
Recipes will be added weekly, easy enough for anyone to make at home.

Please stay tuned for more info as the blog progresses….Thank you for visiting and come back soon!

Bem Vindos a Figos & Amêndoas!

Acompanhe a progressão deste blog.... Obrigado pela visita e volte em breve!
